"Understanding the Mounds at Feltus: Their Location, Use and Significance."
The Grand Village of the Natchez Indians will present an illustrated talk by Meg Kassabaum entitled “Understanding the Mounds at Feltus: Their Location, Use and Significance” in the museum auditorium at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 29, 2010. Admission is free and seating is limited.
Kassabaum is a graduate student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she holds a Kenan Fellowship. This summer she is employed as a research associate with the Cobb Institute of Archaeology at Mississippi State University. She is a native of St. Louis, Missouri, and began her archaeological career at age 15 working for the Center for American Archaeology in Kampsville, Illinois. She received her BA in Anthropology from Beloit College in Beloit, Wisconsin, where she worked on Middle Woodland mound sites in the Rock River Valley.
She has participated in archaeological excavations in Mississippi since 2006 and is writing her dissertation on the Feltus Mounds, a late prehistoric site in western Jefferson County. Her dissertation focuses on the activities that took place at Feltus just before and during the mound construction by analyzing the excavated pottery and food remains. The Feltus site originally consisted of four mounds surrounding an open ceremonial plaza. By the early 1970s, only three mounds remained. To locate the missing mound, Kassabaum and her colleagues used compass measurements taken at the site by B. L. C. Wailes in 1852. Wailes, an early geologist and historian, visited several mound sites in the Natchez region and kept detailed journals, which are preserved in the Archives Library of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History.
